The lecture's topic will be “Black Prophetic Faith and the Soul of Democracy”: This presentation intertwines the legacies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Howard Thurman to illuminate a path forward for America. Rooted in King’s radical pursuit of the Beloved Community and Thurman’s contemplative spirituality, the lecture confronts dehumanization and injustice while calling for a democracy grounded in love, unity, and transformative renewal.
Dr. Clark is Associate Professor of Theology at Xavier University. He earned his Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary under the mentorship of Dr. James H. Cone, and he integrates Black liberation theology, contemplative praxis, and justice work in his scholarship and teaching. Committed to the idea that theological education in the twenty-first century must function as a counter-story, Dr. Clark equips students to read against the grain of the dominant culture by raising critical consciousness, unmasking conventional wisdom, and reimagining the good.
