The 2023 Bowen Lectures with Dr. Mary Lin Hudson (1 of 2)

We are excited to announce that Dr. Mary Lin Hudson will be delivering the 2023 Bowen Lectures on Monday, March 27 at 7:30 pm and Wednesday, March 29 at 11:15 am at Hamilton Chapel on the Memphis Theological Seminary campus (with a Zoom option available). Dr. Hudson’s title for her lectures is “The Changing World of the Worshiping Church.”

The first lecture, “The Times They Were a-Changing: Looking back with fresh eyes over 50 years of transition in preaching and worship” will be Monday, March 27 at 7:30 pm (CDT).

The second lecture, “The Times They Still Are a-Changing: Looking ahead to transitions in the future of preaching and worship” will be Wednesday, March 29 at 11:15 am (CDT).

A link to the Zoom webinar will be sent at noon (CDT) on March 27 and at 8:00 am (CDT) on March 29 to registrants. If you register after this point, the link will be sent to you before the events begin.

Mary Lin Hudson is Professor of Homiletics and Liturgics at Memphis Theological Seminary. She joined the faculty of Memphis Theological Seminary in January 1988. Her research interests in the area of preaching include homiletic theology, storytelling and narrative structures in sermon design, and situational preaching for a 21st century world.

In the area of liturgics, she explores the intersection of ethics and liturgical theology, with particular interest in the meaning and practice of the sacraments of Eucharist and baptism.

She co-authored the book, Saved From Silence: Finding Women’s Voice in Preaching (1999) with Dr. Mary Donovan Turner. She also contributed the sections on Advent and Christmas to New Proclamation: Year A in 2010.  Her early work focused on the ministry and preaching of Louisa Mariah Woosley, the first ordained woman in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Hudson has authored journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, and sermons for various publications.

Dr. Hudson is an ordained minister with the Missouri Mid-South Conference of the United Church of Christ. In that role, she serves as a member of the Committee on Ministry: Preparation of the St. Louis Association. She is an active member of First Congregational Church of Memphis where she has served in numerous roles.

Before joining the faculty of Memphis Theological Seminary, Dr. Hudson served as the pastor of the Cedar Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, TN.

Each lecture event is worth 1 colloquia credit for MTS MDiv and MACM students. To receive credit, they must **register with their MTS email addresses**, indicate on this form that they are seeking colloquia credit, and attend the Zoom webinar.
