The Gina M. Stewart Scholarship was created by the congregation at Christ Missionary Baptist Church to honor their pastor by financially supporting African American women in ministry at Memphis Theological Seminary.
Rev. Gina Stewart was the first African American woman elected to serve an established African American Baptist congregation in Memphis and Shelby County. She has led the congregation of Christ Missionary Baptist Church since March 1995. Rev. Stewart received a Master of Divinity degree from Memphis Theological Seminary in May 1996. In September 2015, she released her first book entitled We’ve Got Next: HERstory in HIStory.
MTS Director of Financial Aid, Rev. Fekecia Gunn says, “The Gina M. Stewart Scholarship is great because it promotes and focuses on theological education for minority women. And because this scholarship is tied to such a powerhouse and pioneer, attached to it is the prestige and the reputation that comes along with the name and the personhood of Dr. Stewart.”
One recipient of this scholarship said, ” “I am honored to know that there are kind people who believe in my dreams, goals and future accomplishments in the ministry to help others. ”
