Blessing of the Pets
October 01
MEMPHIS, TN-Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS) will hold its third annual “Blessing of the Pets” service on Sunday, October 1 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the seminary’s campus, 168 East Parkway South. (Additional parking available at Lindenwood Christian Church, located across the street from the seminary). The service is open to the public.
MTS asks that all animals that participate in the service:
• Must be in carriers or on a leash
• Are up-to-date on all vaccinations
• Are spayed and neutered
The Blessing of the Pets is observed on or around October 4 on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment in the Catholic Church (although the service is observed by other denominations). St. Francis founded the Franciscan Order in the 11th century and is remembered for ministering to the poor and sick. He is also remembered for his love of animals and nature.
Blessing of the Pets is an interfaith, inter-denominational community event for families and their pets to enjoy an afternoon of fun on the grounds of Memphis Theological Seminary. All animal companions are welcome.
Memphis Theological Seminary (MTS) is an ecumenical graduate school of theology that seeks to create a higher theological educational setting that is committed to scholarship, piety, and justice. MTS was founded in 1852 in McKenzie, Tennessee as an educational arm of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
