SCHOLARSHIPS
Welcome to Memphis Theological Seminary!  It is our hope that scholarship funds will be available to assist you in paying tuition and other fees.  Please take note of the information and look through our scholarships categorized below.

Current Students

Current Students must complete the Scholarship Application Form each year, by May 30. Students will be notified by MTS e-mail of their scholarship awards, and must provide a donor thank-you letter prior to release of scholarship funds. Annual Applications deadline is May 30.

Open Scholarships

Kemmons Wilson Family Foundation (KWFF) Scholarship

The Wilson Scholar(s) must be an incoming, first-year student, enrolled full-time*, who is answering God’s call to ministry and demonstrates financial need.  Amounts of scholarship awards and number of students chosen will vary annually.  Wilson Scholars are eligible to continue receiving the scholarship for a maximum of three calendar years if they maintain a semester and cumulative 3.0 GPA and continue to be enrolled as a full-time student.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.

Scholarships are contingent on annual receipt of grant funding from The Kemmons Wilson Family Foundation.  Wilson Scholars are expected to attend one annual event at the Foundation and one with Foundation representatives at MTS.

H.W. Durham Foundation Scholarship

Durham Scholars must be age 55+, exhibit strong promise for excellence in ministry, articulate their faith in a compelling way, and demonstrate financial need.  Durham Scholars are eligible to continue receiving the scholarship for a maximum of three calendar years.  When new funding is available, priority is given to incoming, first-year students.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.

Scholarships are contingent on annual receipt of grant funding from The H.W. Durham Foundation.  Durham Scholars are expected to attend one annual event with Durham Foundation representatives at MTS.

Robert Lee Truax, Mary Lee Truax, and Robert Lee Truax, Jr., Award for Academic Achievement Endowment Fund

The requirements for this Academic Achievement Award are very rigorous and include outstanding GPA in mathematics and psychology (undergrad), and a passion for foreign languages. Awards are available only to senior Master of Divinity students at MTS.  For a complete list of qualifications, contact the Director of Admissions. The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Paul R. Dekar and Nancy R. Dekar Endowment for Immersion Studies

This endowment provides scholarship support to MTS students who wish to experience an immersion through a scheduled, approved credit course at MTS.  For more information, contact the Admissions Associate. The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

African American Student Scholarships

Dr. Henry Logan Starks Scholarships

Starks Scholars must be African American and are eligible to apply after the first semester at MTS, if they receive and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and take a minimum 6 credit hours per semester. This scholarship provides a 10% discount on tuition to all who qualify.

African American Honors Scholarships

Honors Scholars must be African American, come to MTS with an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.5, and enroll full-time in the fall and spring semesters.  Honors Scholars must maintain semester and cumulative GPAs of minimum 3.0.  This scholarship provides a 40% discount on tuition to all who qualify.

McCulloch Family Scholarship

The McCulloch Scholar must be an African American preparing for ministry, or if none qualifies, must be a student with demonstrated financial need and promise in ministry who is a member of a minority group, such as Native American, Asian, or Hispanic/Latino. The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Memphis Inter-Denominational Fellowship Book Scholarship

The MID-Fellowship Scholar is an African American female who is a first-year student, full-time, pursuing a Master of Divinity degree.  This is a cash award of $250 in the fall semester and $250 in the spring semester, and is contingent on annual funding from the Memphis Inter-Denominational Fellowship.

Presbyterian Scholarships – CPC, CPCA & PC(USA)

Cumberland Presbyterian Honor Scholarships

Cumberland Presbyterian Honor Scholarships for full tuition may be awarded each year to two students who had an undergraduate minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale and who are enrolled in the Master of Divinity program. The scholarship funds include the 60% service loan allotment. The Honor Scholarship is awarded automatically each semester as long as the student maintains a seminary minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50. Should a student fail to maintain the required GPA, the scholarship will be dropped for the semester immediately following. Should the student regain the required GPA, the scholarship will be reinstated.

Cardelia Howell-Diamond Scholarship

The Howell-Diamond Scholar must be a female student from a Cumberland Presbyterian Church in the Lubbock, TX, area, or a CPC in Presbytery del Cristo, or if none fill those qualifications, a female student in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  The Howell-Diamond Scholar receives $2,500 per year in scholarship support. Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts. This scholarship is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Gadsden Area Churches Scholarship

This scholarship is available to Cumberland Presbyterian students who are 1) from the Gadsden area CP Churches, or if no students qualify, 2) from Grace Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, or if no students qualify, 3) from any CP church in the state of Alabama.  Students receive $1,000 annually in scholarship assistance, and must maintain a C average (2.5 GPA) or above.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  This scholarship is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Bernice A. Humphreys Scholarship

Humphrey’s Scholars must be Presbyterian students seeking a Masters degree (MDiv, MAR, MAYM), with preference given to students under care of a PC(USA) Presbytery.  Humphreys Scholars receive a maximum $1,000 per year in scholarship support.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  Scholarships are contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Cumberland Presbyterian Service Loan

Cumberland Presbyterian students may apply for financial assistance in the form of service loans for up to 60% of tuition. The note for the service loan contains a stipulation which calls for cancellation of the note after a period of service in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church as set forth in the service loan agreement. An exit interview with a Business Office representative is required prior to graduation. Follow-up monitoring will be conducted by the Business Office following graduation on a semi-annual basis in order to ascertain that recipients are fulfilling their service loan obligation.

New Salem (WC) Church Scholarship

New Salem Scholars must be Cumberland Presbyterian, and the church elders prefer keeping the same student(s) throughout their seminary journey.  One or two students will share $1,000 in scholarship funds in the fall semester only.  The scholarship is contingent on annual funding from the New Salem (Weakley County, Sharon, TN) Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Margaret M. Dirks Scholarship

The Dirks Scholar must be a PC(USA) student seeking a Master of Divinity degree and ordination, have a cumulative 2.5 GPA in undergraduate studies, and have completed one semester at MTS with a minimum 2.5 GPA.  Written and signed verification from the presbytery is required.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  Scholarships are contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Missouri-Arkansas PC(USA)

This scholarship is available to students from any of the First Presbyterian Churches of Piggott, AR, Pocahontas, AR, and Doniphan, MO.  If none qualify, it is available to an international student.  Students must maintain a 2.5 GPA.  Awards are announced in the fall semester.  Scholarships are contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Methodist Scholarships (UM, CME, AME)

Mary Guice Memorial Scholarship

Mary Guice Memorial Scholarship is funded by the Mississippi Annual Conference Alumni Association. The Mary Guice Scholar must be a United Methodist from the Mississippi Annual Conference, and is chosen by the Alumni Association Executive Committee.  Awards are announced in the fall semester.  Scholarships are contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Cora Hawkins Crutchfield Endowment

The Crutchfield Scholar must be a married Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) student.  The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.  The scholarship is awarded in the fall semester only, after the drop date.

Tri-Mu Bible Class Scholarship

Tri-Mu Scholars must be United Methodist, with preference given to students from the Memphis Annual Conference, but if none, from any Annual Conference.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  Amounts of scholarship awards and number of students chosen will vary annually, and are contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Richard M. and Martha Carol Barker Scholarship

The Barker Scholar must be a United Methodist in the Memphis Annual Conference, in the second semester or after, with demonstrated financial need.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Dr. Paul Blankenship Scholarship

Dr. Paul Blankenship Scholarship is funded by the Memphis Annual Conference Alumni Association. Blankenship Scholars must be United Methodist in the Memphis Annual Conference, seeking a Masters degree, completed and earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at MTS, have an overall GPA minimum 3.0, be a current member in good standing of a United Methodist Church within the Memphis Conference, and have held membership in that same UMC for at least two consecutive years.  Former recipients may reapply; however, preference will be given to new applicants.  Blankenship Scholars are chosen by the Alumni Association Executive Committee. Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  Amounts of scholarship awards and number of students chosen will vary annually, contingent on Alumni Association funding.

Rev. John Edgar Meeks Memorial Scholarship

Meeks Scholars must be United Methodist (with priority given to the Memphis Annual Conference), incoming first-year students on the Elder track, enrolled full-time, and with demonstrated financial need.  Each student is eligible to retain the scholarship in the second and subsequent semesters until graduation, as long as a minimum 3.0 GPA is maintained, continue on Elder track, and continue full-time status.  If selected students continue to meet the criteria and keep the scholarship, Meeks Scholarships will renew every three years.

Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  Scholarships are contingent on annual funding from the donor, and are intended to cover a maximum of 50% of tuition.

Henry and Alfreda Bunton Scholarship

The Bunton Scholar must be Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME), or if none qualify, another minority student.  Awards are announced in the fall semester only.  The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

The Gunn Scholar must be United Methodist and under guidance of the Board of Ministry of the Memphis Annual Conference.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Bettye and Dick Hendrix Scholarship

Hendrix Scholars are United Methodist students from Arkansas or Mississippi Annual Conferences.  Awards are announced in the fall semester and distributed in fall and spring in equal amounts.  Amounts of scholarship awards and number of students chosen will vary annually, and are contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

International Student Scholarships

International Students Scholarship

This scholarship is available to international students who enroll full-time of nine hours or more in each of the fall and spring semesters, and three hours or more in the summer.  Limited scholarships of up to 70% are available for International students, money is limited so apply early. The scholarship cannot be continued to a second degree program.

Doctor of Ministry Scholarship

Rev. Dr. Loyce Estes Endowment Fund

The Estes Scholar is a Doctor of Ministry candidate who has been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for a minimum of 10 consecutive years.  Additional, rigorous qualifications apply.  For a complete list of qualifications, contact the Director of Admissions.  The scholarship amount will vary annually, and is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.

Non-Application Awards

Randal (Randy) Leslie Endowment
This endowment generates a cash gift for all CP and CPCA students in the Master of Divinity program who are taking a minimum 6 hours, and is intended to help with the cost of books and other incidentals. The amount of the cash gifts will vary annually, contingent on endowment earnings and the number of qualified students. Gifts are made in the fall semester after the drop/add date.  No application is required.
Davis-Wolf Scholarship
This scholarship is provided to Disciples of Christ students who are under care.  The amount of the cash gifts will vary annually, contingent on endowment earnings and the number of qualified students.  Members of the former Faith Christian Church arrange a luncheon each November.  No application is required.
Louisa Woosley Scholarship
The Woosley Scholar must be female, either a Master of Divinity or Master of Arts (Religion) student who plans to graduate the following academic year, has maintained a cumulative minimum 3.5 GPA, and has demonstrated leadership in ministry, church or community.  This $1,000 scholarship is awarded in the fall semester only.  The Woosley Scholar is chosen by a designated faculty member.  No application is required.
Women’s Issues in Ministry Endowment
From this endowment, a cash gift of $250 is given annually to a student who presents the most outstanding research paper on women in professional ministry.  This cash gift is contingent on sufficient endowment earnings.  No application is required.

Rev. Melissa Malinoski

Director of Admissions

Melissa graduated from Bethel University in 1999 and from Memphis Theological Seminary in 2002.  As an ordained Cumberland Presbyterian minister, Melissa has served congregations in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee.   She is married to Rev. T.J. Malinoski.  They are the parents of a son, Morgen and a daughter, Madeline.

Joanna Wilkinson

Admissions Associate

Joanna completed her undergrad from Southwest Baptist University in 2010 and a Master of Arts in Youth Ministry in 2013 from Memphis Theological Seminary. She has worked and served in youth ministry since 2007, currently serves with Junior High youth at Germantown CP Church. Missouri CP Presbytery certified her as a Youth Minister in the Fall of 2013. She and her husband Neal moved from Nashville where they both served in youth ministry to Memphis in the summer of 2015 and love living in the Midtown area.

Rev. Felecia LaVant

Admissions Associate

Felecia completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology at Fisk University in 1982, and MDiv at Memphis Theological Seminary in 2014. She serves as an Associate Minister and the Director of Christian Education at Central Baptist Church, Inc. Felecia also volunteers with Manna House, a place of hospitality in the Catholic Worker Tradition. She is the proud mother of two adult daughters, Andraea and Alexandria.

Rev. Byron Forester

Admissions Associate

Byron is a graduate of Bethel University (1974) and of Memphis Theological Seminary (2007). He serves as pastor of Hopewell Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Benton Co. MS and as Coordinator of Ministries for West Tennessee Presbytery. He participates and serves in several ministries to people who are unsheltered. Byron and his wife, Michelle Brown have three daughters. They live five blocks from MTS.
