“It all started in…1852”

HISTORY

The Memphis Theological Seminary was founded in 1852 as an educational initiative of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A century later in 1964, the seminary moved to Memphis and became among the first to open its doors to men and women of all races and faiths, empowering believers from all walks of life to do outreach with impact. Today, more than a century and a half later, MTS continues its mission to educate and sustain Christian men and women, equipping students to lead vital ministries in the real world.

OPPORTUNITY

At a time when seminaries are shrinking and churches are losing followers at a rapid pace, our work is more relevant than ever. MTS is poised to expand its capacity to invest in a new generation of faith leaders, and we’re excited to offer you the opportunity to partner with us by joining the 1852 Society. In homage to the seminary’s inaugural class, members of the 1852 Society play a pivotal role in advancing ecumenical education in the twenty-first century. By committing to a minimum gift of $18.52 each month, donors like you can make a meaningful gesture of support. In fact, if every donor pledged to give at this level, the society would generate an additional $750,000 for MTS—each year! All of this for less than the cost of a tank of gas!

By joining the 1852 Society, you will become a leader in the effort to:
• Broadcast the seminary’s mission and ministry to a greater audience, giving those considering a theological education the chance to respond to their calling
• Increase our ability to offer scholarships to a broader audience of students seeking an education
• Enable us to serve the evolving needs of our community, region, and world

We need your commitment. Please, pledge to give future generations the opportunity each student at Memphis Theological Seminary has had since the doors first opened in 1852—to prepare for relevant, meaningful ministry in the real world.
